Among the reasons the 2025 filing season went well was that the IRS had its largest workforce in many years and faced no major tax law changes that required implementation during the filing season. Entering 2026, the landscape is markedly different. Why ending taxes on tips could backfire - WP
Tax Policy Center Analysis: The lowest-income 20 percent of households, those making about $35,000 or less, would get a tax cut of less than 1 percent, or about $160 on average. Including the loss of some Affordable Care Act health insurance premium subsidies, their tax cut would fall to only about $60. Those making less than $20,000 would pay $40 more in taxes after losing their premium tax subsidies.... By contrast, households making between $460,000 and $1.1 million (the top 95th to 99th percent of income) would be the biggest beneficiaries. The bill would cut their taxes by an average of nearly $21,000, or 4.3 percent of their after-tax income. In dollar terms, the biggest winners would be the top 0.1 percent of households, those making more than $5 million annually. Their taxes would decline by an average of almost $300,000, or about 3.3 percent of their after-tax income.

Mon, April 14, 2025:
From Politico - major issues for the tax committees to resolve in the budget reconciliation deliberations:

  • How high do Republicans need to hike the $10,000 SALT cap to appease their blue-state members?

  • Might Republicans seek to further expand the Child Tax Credit this year, which could help stave off criticisms that their tax cuts will largely benefit the better off?

  • What budget baseline to use.

  • Beyond extending the TCJA provisions, Republicans also want to pass Trump’s idea to scrap taxes on tipped income, overtime pay and Social Security benefits.

  • They’ve also shown interest in bringing back key incentives for businesses, like immediate deductions for research costs and full expensing for capital investments.
